Minority Grants

Grants Dept.

From the Office of Administration

There are a variety of minority grants available for those who qualify, you might qualify even if you don't think you do. Financial awards are given to students who show financial need through grants. There are usually some qualifications for grants, but, unlike scholarships, they are not usually rewarded simply for merit. Minority grants are awarded based on minority status.

People often think of "minority grants" as being awarded to minority groups based upon their ethnicity. For example, people of minority ethnic groups like Native Americans, Hispanic Americans, and African-Americans can often get minority grants specific to their particular ethnicity. These grants are offered in order to diversify both the education sector and those professional fields normally not filled with people of that ethnic group.

While it's true that ethnicity is often a qualifying factor to obtain a minority grant, it's not always true. Women, too, are considered a minority, with many grants specifically earmarked for them. Students with disabilities may also be eligible for specific grants that have been set up for them.

So where can you find minority grants? Besides the normal sources of school grants, such as the Pell Grant, you can contact minority foundations. African-Americans can obtain minority grants from the United Negro College fund, as one example. There is financial aid available for a number of ethnic groups, so make sure you explore all options.

Another place you may apply for grants is through major corporations. Corporations promote diversity, and one of the ways they can do this is to have minority participants utilize their grant programs. While these are not minority specific grants, the chances of getting one as a minority are quite high.

How do you begin looking for grants for college? You need to file the FAFSA in order to qualify for grants. whether or not you can qualify for government programs is also going to determine in at least some capacity whether or not you can qualify for minority grants. Remember, grants are awarded based on financial need, and the FAFSA is used to determine whether or not you have financial need.

Once you have filed the FAFSA and pursued your federal options, begin looking around for options that are specific to minorities. If you don't qualify for help as determined by Federal Student Financial Aid, it's also quite likely that you won't qualify for grants targeted to minorities, either. If you do qualify, though, you have a number of grants available to you if you are determined to have minority status; take advantage of these options before you struggle to pay for college all by yourself. College is pricey, and any assistance you can get is probably going to be most welcome!
